| Customer Reviews: Well-made, quick lacing, somewhat narrow fit March 31, 2010 M. G. Saldivar 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my third pair of newfangled 'tactical' combat boots. I've owned many pairs of old-style combat boots such as the all-leather Altamas from the BDU era, leather-and-canvas jungle boots, and suede-and-canvas (or nylon) desert boots. As I get older, I desire more ankle support so I have tried the newer-style tactical boots that have thickly padded and/or reinforced shafts and padded tongues, as well as sneaker-like design. (See my other reviews.)
The Bates M-8 is very well-made and has a nice design. The padding and reinforcements on tongue and shaft are obvious when wearing the boots but not overwhelmingly so - they DON'T feel like ski boots. The tread is very aggressive and is perhaps the best off-road outsole I've ever had in boot. Unlike other tactical boots that either have 'normal' eyelets or plastic faux-speedlace eyelets, the Bates M-8 has plastic eyelets that are pretty close to the speedlacing found on Altama BDU boots or the current-issue suede-and-Cordura desert boots worn with ACU or MARPAT uniforms. I can lace/unlace these boots more quickly than any other tactical boots I own.
My only concern is that they seem to be sized rather narrow. I usually wear an 11 extra-wide or a 12 wide, and I prefer to default to too-loose rather than too-tight. Some manufactures, like Wellco, make a VERY wide extra-wide but my 11 extra-wide Bates fit more like a regular wide. I did not get them from Amazon so I can't exchange them, and they're comfortable enough after I played around with lacing and switched out the included insole, which was very thick. So, all is well for me, but if you have a wide foot and/or prefer to err on the side of too-loose like I do, I suggest you order 1/2 size up from your normal size, even if you find this model in extra-wide.
